New interior elder abuse hotline getting steady stream of calls

An elder abuse hotline recently launched by the Interior Health Authority has been getting a steady stream of calls since it opened in May.

It’s bitter sweet for organizers who are happy people are using the service but saddened to know that it’s needed.

The 2011 census shows more than 27 per cent of Okanagan residents are over 65 years old. That means many in our communities may be vulnerable, so health officials have launched an elder abuse hotline to report abuse or neglect in the interior.

W have staff that are trained to investigate and look into reports of abuse or neglect. We will go out see what the client’s wishes are regarding the situation and connect them with supports and services that are appropriate for them,” Brett Butchart with Interior Health explained.
