Beware of new telephone scams

By Elizabeth Nykorowytsch Macnab, BA, CHRP, CHRL

Recently, seniors have been reporting to Ontario Society of Senior Citizens Organizations (OSSCO)that they received aggressive or threatening calls supposedly from CRA (Canada Revenue Agency). Some operators have threatened the senior i.e. if you do not return the call within  the next 3 hours, your husband will be jailed. Other operators have represented themselves as police officers i.e. I am Officer Peter Sampson calling on behalf of the CRA. These operators are aggressive, threatening and calling the senior multiple times.

I spoke with the Toronto Police Department Communications Centres on August 22nd . They informed me that these types of calls are all fraudulent, placed from outside of Canada. You can contact your local police department Communications Centre of Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to report such a call. Please be patient when contacting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as there is a long wait.  You can also find this information in OSSCO’s brochure Roadmap for Informed Decision making under “Make a Complaint” section. This brochure is found online under Information and Referral section of www.ocsco.ca website.
